A note from Frank Shoemaker Sr
My Grandpa and I email back and forth a lot. He wrote me last night with some interesting thoughts to ponder:
"Learn as if you were going to live forever....
Live as if you were going to die tomorrow...
Do not value the things you have in your life,
but value who you have in your life..."

Chicago, Atlanta, Portland
So I had a good time working in the Chicago RazorFish office for a week. It was cool to see life from another perspective, and just be in a new city. (Not seeing a Peachtree street... Laughter...)
I think what I liked most of all was being able to walk back to the hotel after work. The city is so alive and it seems more people embrace public transportation. Here in Atlanta you almost have to have a car to truly get around the city which has always frustrated me a bit.
Amanda and I also really want to visit Portland sometime soon. My buddy Ward and his Wife just moved out there and have had very good things to say about it; guess we will see.

Atlanta Skateboarding
I ran across this from old skate pal Ryan Flynn's site. There is a whole new generation of skaters here in Atlanta. Pretty amazing what these guys are doing. Good thing I quit when I did. (Laughter)

Chicago photos + Back in Atlanta
Hello. I have posted a few of my better shots of Chicago on my PhotoBlog site; enjoy. It's been a really long week.
**UPDATE. Just got back in Atlanta. Super tired. I did post a few of the other shots I took that turned out alright. You can view them at the link above, or by clicking here. Have a good night.

Sweet Tea
So I tried to order Sweet Tea @ a restaurant the other night. (Even though I know you can't get that up here) The server looked at me like I was an idiot. I should have asked for grits too. Gotta love Chicago.

RazorFish and Delta (laughter)
A few things. I am going to be working out of the Chicago RazorFish office this week. Should be a good time. And speaking of flying; this Delta flash spoof is the funniest thing I have ever seen.

Being humble and the strive for great work
Anyone that knows me knows how humble I am about my work. I have never been a big fan of people with egos. Every sport, physical activity, etc has egos; skateboarding was the same way when I was involved in that and I hated it.
Being humble and the strive for great work. This subject is something I have been wanting to write about for a long time. I promised to anyone who reads my blog that I would try my best to write stuff with a bit more substance. (Oh, but it’s fun to post random links now and then)
So I worked on this project for --- at work. For those of you that don’t know, --- is ----------- high end brand of luxury cars. I remember going over the creative brief thinking “holy shit, this is really big, this is a challenge and I really need to step up to the plate and impress the hell out of the client, cd and my peers”. (Fast FWD)
After some sketches and initial conversations with my cd, I felt I had a solution that could really work for the initial design. (Note: drawing things out first is by far the best solution when trying to figure out the process and functionality for a site. In Art school I used to get excited too fast and jump right to the computer, only to fail after about an hour because the idea was just not solid yet)
I stayed late a few nights really trying to get it where I wanted. Even though these were going to be the first round, I wanted things to be as tight as possible. (Fast FWD)
We go into the meeting the following morning and the client director really loved it. I was really comfortable speaking to the design because I had thought out well; everything. There was nothing I really left untouched and I felt my work the day’s before reflected that. (Fast FWD)
It was shown to the client and the really loved it. (Fast FWD about 6 months.. Ok, so maybe it was a little longer than that)
Earlier in the week our group went to the SEED awards. My part in the project helped it win an award for interactive. They even printed out these cool books. I was mainly the Art Director on the project and was listed as that. I can’t tell you how happy it made me; seeing something that came out of my head being recognized. I worked with an awesome team of folks on the project. They all know who they are. It could not have been done without the help of everyone.
In summary, it helps me realize better what I feel I am capable of. Also, that I don’t need to get scared when I am asked to step up to the plate. Maybe it’s been in me for a really long time, and I just felt that it was my time to shine. If anything, I feel the next time I have a big idea I don’t need to be scared what other people might think of it. As they always say, you have to fight for what you believe in. Thanks for listening.

POKE NEW YORK
My buddy Tom Ajello loves to send me links. They updated the Poke site. Check it out. Looks like a live web cam.
**UPDATE! Yeah, it's live. I aim-ed a few people and they walked in front of it for me. That's pretty damn cool!

SEED Awards
Amanda and I just got home from the SEED awards. RazorFish took one for our work on AmgTV; I admit I am very proud of that. It was good to run into some old and new faces. Chatted with Dave Werner for a few. Seems like he is doing some cool things in SF. Iconologic seemed to clean house with all the awards they won. Corey, your name came up on the screen as an "Iconologic Alumni". Good times.
Oh Mason.... I am still waiting for your responce to my post.

Design or Flash part 2
So, I ran into my buddy Mason Poe tonight at the AIGA event. We talked a little about my recent post about my current thoughts on where I stand with design and flash. Well, this post is your reminder my friend. Let's hear your feedback.
Ok, time for some sleep. I took over 1000 photos and will have to go through some of them tomorrow.

matt berger + rick hill = bergerhill
I just got BergerHill up and running again. They seem to have upgraded their hosting and broke the site. Good job Matt. Stick to writing copy. Enjoy.

Hello
Wow, I have been really busy the last few day's. I was invited to come shoot AIGA's Design of Hip Hop tomorrow; that should be pretty cool. You should come and check it out. Also, we (RazorFish) are doing the HOW Design Studio tour here on Sunday. I hope I can wake.

World premiere! Just kidding.
Ok, so I won't even try to sit and here and act like I am the first person to make a beat with Garage Band. However, I did make one today and wanted to share it with the world. You can enjoy it by clicking here. Thanks for your time.

Design or Flash?
Anyone that knows me knows how much I love using Flash. Ok, let me back that up; I love using Flash when it fits a specific task, gives work it’s voice, or solves a clients problem. There is just something really fun about being able to communicate things with motion.
Over the last few months I have felt a little frustrated with technology. I am always trying to push what can be done from a design perspective. Over time I have become more and more able to execute my idea’s. But there comes a point where stuff gets really damn complex. I think people that work in the environment know exactly where I am coming from. It seems you can write 10 lines of code, into 50 and already be in a huge mess. (And my brain really does not work that way) How nice would it be if I knew all syntax like English? Wow, maybe they could have taught me actionScript in grade school so some things would not seem so impossible at times; granted I do feel like I know a lot and continue to learn more. (Lot’s of long nights. My Wife probably hates me at times for it.)
I look at my friend John's work. He does not even use Flash at all. His work truly inspires me and sometimes makes me think I should just kill Flash all together. At the same time beautiful work and the ability to bring it to life has always been something I love. I feel like the more I know, the more I can come up with because I have a more broad range of what’s possible.
But, technology seems to be getting more and more complex. There seems to be a clear side between a Designer, Flash Designer and down right programmer. I feel I am somewhere between a Designer, Flash whateverYouWantToCallIt and I am not sure that’s where I want to be. Typography books or AS 3 books? Or, are the lines blurred these day's? Can anyone give me advice?
