DMB to play Piedmont Park Sept. 8
So, the rumor is true. The Piedmont Park Conservancy has nabbed the Dave Matthews Band, one of the world's most popular touring acts, for a benefit concert at the in-town park scheduled for Sept. 8. In keeping with the DMB tradition of performing benefit concerts in significant U.S. city parks, we are pleased to announce that Dave Matthews Band and very special guest The Allman Brothers Band are confirmed to play on the Meadow at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, GA on Saturday, September 8, 2007. Dave Matthews Band's benefit concert will be the first of its magnitude in Piedmont Park and with the return of Georgia's own legendary Allman Brothers Band, is a concert that should not be missed! Proceeds will benefit Piedmont Park and will aid in the enhancement and preservation of the park as a vital, urban green space offering cultural and recreational resources to all who visit.

BergerHill, Atlanta
Internet ^5 to my good friends BergerHill. They just had a pretty cool write up in BizJournals about the Ping Pop Art show.
Microsoft doesn’t need an ad agency
Ok, so I ran across this today. Interesting and a little scary at the same time. Here is the quote that sticks out in my mind:
"Whether Avenue A/Razorfish's staff can be convinced to lay aside their Macs, Photoshop, and Flash and become adept at creating digital masterpieces in Silverlight is a cultural, not an operational issue, but creating this kind of creative vanguard would be very helpful to Microsoft as it attempts to sell the IPTV solution to brand advertisers in the next few years."

SilverLight, no thanks.
"0% Market Penetration - Anyone choosing Silverlight for an application today should have their head examined. Every single end user is going to download and install a proprietary plug-in from Microsoft. It will take years before market penetration is meaningful, my guess is that 2012 might be a decent year for Silverlight. It took Flash Player 4 releases to get 80% traction and 2 more to get into the 90% market penetration. Microsoft will get to 50% using Windows Update(cough, anti-trust, cough) but the remaining 48% is going to be a near impossible climb."
This is an interesting read.
This is an interesting read.

Typography Friday
It's back.It's a little more abstract this time. One of the things I have been wanting to do over the last few months is really study type more. I love it, I need it and use it in my daily life. So, we will see what comes as I continue to grow as a designer. Hop on over to Flickr and check it out.

iTunes + Papervision3D + Tweener
It's pretty cool to see people pushing what can be done in Flash. Check this iTunes look and feel, done in Flash with PaperVision3D and Tweener.
Rambo 4
I saw this trailer last night on my buddy chesterfly's blog. I don't know about you, but I am going to be one of the first in the door. I grew up on Rambo. Hearing the audio in the first few moments of the trailer really takes me back to First Blood. Anyone else want to join me?

Evan Sheffield
"Cathy, Webb and Christopher got to the Medical Center of Central Georgia and raced inside. Evan’s other brother, Thomas, and stepmother were already there, waiting for news. Eventually, when Evan was stabilized, they were ushered in to see him. “He looked like he was asleep,” his mother recalls. “He was just beautiful … just these tiny cuts on his forehead.”
But the internal injuries, to his brain and his right lung, were severe. He was on life support. Doctors told the family that if Evan survived, he could be brain-damaged, blind and unable to walk. One told them, “In our estimation, there are things worse than death.”
Evan was my best friend. Read the story. I miss you. RIP.

Skateboarding
I remember doing a switch kickFlip over some trash can @ Ga Tech back in the day; my ankle breaking and hearing it snap; sitting on the ground screaming in pain that was so intense I passed out. When I came to, my friend Matt made me walk all the way back to North ave to call my Mom so I could go to the hospital. 8 weeks I was out. All I could think about was when I would be able to come downtown again to skate.
I turn 28 this year. I don't miss getting hurt, but I do think there is something to be said about what skateboarding did for my life. It provided me with a creative outlet, same as art did. I look back and there were so many great times. Tampa Am, road trips and lot's of laughs.
I like seeing the work that Zach over at LivinSick is doing. It's cool to check out what these crazy kids are jumping down. The bar is so much higher now. Kenny, hurry up and get back in town so we can go ride.

I use Fuse
Ok, so I know I am probably not the first person to write about this but.. I am here to say that I will never use McTween again. Sure, it was great when I started to pull myself away from timeline based animations; I feel it gave me a great foundation for writing clean simple code based animations in Flash.
Over the last 2 months I have moved over to using Fuse full time. The move went from McTween, Tweener and now Fuse. Why Fuse? Well, (IMHO) it's the best tween class out there.. The more stuff I need to do, the more it seems to be able to handle.
Tonight I was playing around with the custom easing tool. Now, in the older version it seemed to generate really messy code. Maybe some comment blocks would help format it a little better. But, the new version is REALLY powerful. It puts everything into an Array and all you have to do is reference that Array.
Example:
//Here is the custom easing Array:
var customEasing:Array = [0,0.027,0.08,0.175,0.357,0.966,0.893,0.82,0.746];
//Import for Fuse
import com.mosesSupposes.fuse.*;
ZigoEngine.register(Fuse, FuseItem, PennerEasing, CustomEasing);
//Now, let's animate my movieClip ZigoEngine.doTween({target:box1_mc, _y: 300, time:3 ,ease:customEasing});
What I really like is the object syntax. Being on the creative side of things this makes it really easy to understand and write. (I mean, come on, it's easier than plain English)
There are some great Fuse cheatSheets I have blogged about to that will help you get a better idea for what can be passed in.
I love learning. The more I know, the more creative things I feel like I can do. Pay Fuse a visit, and make your Flash life a lot more dynamic and fun.

Lot's on my mind
Alright so let's see if I can list out everything in my mind today. The Art Institute of Atlanta has asked me to come by this week to help judge their student interactive competition. Aside from the stress I am under, I am really looking forward to it.
My Wife's friend Dave was fired from his job for his blog. So, be careful what you blog about at work. (I like Dave, but I always thought his post were a little offensive. I doubt he means any of it anyway)
I have a bag for sale on eBay if you are interested. If you are in the Atlanta area I will even ship it to you for free; that or drive over and give it to you. (It's good to get rid of clutter)
I think that's all for now.

Ray Underhill needs help!
"Grab those hammers—it's time to break those piggy banks! What may be the largest auction for collectable skateboard items is upon us. Pros and industry notables from the past and present have donated a grip of one-of-a-kind gear to help raise money for Ray Underhill and his battle against a chordoma brain tumor. This auction offers one absolute guarantee that no other auction can offer: zero buyer's remorse! This sounds cliché, but it's true—Ray Underhill is one of the nicest guys in skateboarding, and his friends have come out en force to help him and his family in this difficult time. He may be the only pro skater who ever substituted "fudge" for the other naughty word that starts with F. Ray was always willing to step up and help others, and this auction is our opportunity to do the same for him.
Ray turned pro for Powell Peralta during the 1980s, earned his own model, and traveled the world for contests and demos. He eventually married, had two children, and settled in North Carolina, where he works for Eastern Skateboard Supply as a graphic artist.
Last year Ray was diagnosed with a chordoma brain tumor. He's undergone surgeries and battled back from paralyzed vocal cords and other complications. He'll spend the summer at Loma Linda medical facilities in California for radiation treatment.
It's a testament to Ray's personality that so many heavies in the skate world pitched in for the cause. All proceeds will benefit the Underhill family so you can bid away knowing that at the very least, you're helping an awesome skate brother (and also getting some sweet gear in the process.) How can any significant other argue with you dropping some bills on skate gear with motivation like that? Rock on Ray!
This eBay auction is hosted by Grind For Life (www.grindforlife.org), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide financial assistance to cancer patients and their families when traveling long distances to doctors and hospitals.
For more information and updates on the Ray Underhill auction, visit www.rayunderhill.com."

Mothers Day
Ok, so I am not super fond of Mothers Day. Actually, if someone were to ask me in person I would probably tell them that I hate it.
This is the only photo I have of my Mom. I keep it in my wallet. It’s old worn and faded; somewhat like my memories of her are becoming.
Happy Mothers Day.

Drunk David Hasselhoff
Wow, this guy is an idiot.
"A new video of a very drunk David Hasselhoff has made the rounds on the internet and on television, forcing the Baywatch star to admit to a long battle with alcoholism. The 16-year-old daughter of David Hasselhoff, Taylor Ann, recorded the video and can be heard speaking to David on it, three months ago, after a night of heavy drinking by her father in an attempt to show him what he gets like when he drinks and "scare him straight." It's unclear how the tape then made its way to the world of celebrity journalism, but there was a drunk David Hasselhoff on TV on Thursday trying very unsuccessfully to eat a hamburger and failing and slurring his speech."

Skateboarding
So my buddy Kenny and I went skateboarding today for a bit. I don't know what was more fun; me slamming on my ankle or him and I talking about the "rockStar" like image that's portrayed in the life of todays skater. We skated this well known spot called the "foundation". Lucky for us, it was early enough in the day so no one was really up yet to show us up.
That's one thing I suppose will always remain within skateboarding. Before I quit (1999) I skated the 40 yard a lot. Saturdays people would come from all over the place. You would always know when someone showed up for a little spotlight action. Kids snaking each other, tails smacking the ground when a trick was landed. Egos over nothing.
It's supposed to be about fun. If you are are skating for fame, why even bother?
In my opinion, it's like football now in a sense. You are hot one min and then no longer marketable when the next best thing comes along. Working at a Skateshop back in college really got me exposed to the amount of money in skateboarding. It's insane and really rubbed me the wrong way.
Anyway, good to have another old school guy to push around with. Here's to tweaked ankles.

Dave Matthews performing "Gravedigger" on AOL Music Sessions. There is beauty in the simplicity of an acoustic guitar.
