A Sunday Breakfast

I remember the dress you wore
We had breakfast
You smiled
I smiled back.

I talked about the future
You talked about your new love
I said “another Coke please”.

We cracked a few jokes
About my childhood, and books you used to read to me
Pink Panther was my favorite.

You said “of course I always will”
The tab was paid with a shiny new $100 bill
It was obvious that you wanted me to notice.

Our time ended with a smile
And a “see you next time”
It’s been almost 5 years.
